One of the major challenges in the children’s mental health field is successfully integrating the values and principles of systems of care with individualized care, evidence-based practices, family choice, and performance measurement. This plenary provided a rationale for the importance of this type of integrated, comprehensive approach.

Effective systems of care include ongoing assessment of how well they are doing at implementing their theory of change and achieving their goals. This allows them to be continuously improving their performance. This workshop described the rationale for performance management systems, and gave examples of how it is being done in communities across the country.

    The SAMHSA System of Care website is devoted to providing information about the mental health of children, youth and families within the context of the Systems of Care philosophy. Systems of Care is an approach to services that recognizes the importance of family, school and community, and seeks to promote the full potential of every child and youth by addressing their physical, emotional, intellectual, cultural and social needs.

    The Research and Training Center for Children’s Mental Health works to strengthen the empirical foundation for effective systems of care, and improve services for children with serious emotional or behavioral disorders and their families.

    The Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development (GUCCHD) was established over four decades ago to improve the quality of life for all children and youth, especially those with, or at risk for, special needs and their families.

  • Bruce J. Kamradt Presentation Slides: Designing and Sustaining a System of Carepdf: Wraparound Milwaukee

    Powerpoint slides from the Bruce J. Kamradt, Director, Wraparound Milwaukee workshop at the 2007 Virginia statewide conference: Systems of Care and Evidence-based Practices: Tools that Work for Youth and Families. Wraparound Milwaukee, a former SAMHSA grantee site, is a unique health maintenance organization that promotes collaboration among child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and education in the treatment of children with serious emotional, mental health and behavioral challenges. This workshop discussed Wraparound Milwaukee and how it has worked to effectively engage families, address cultural competence, and provide community-based alternatives to residential treatment and psychiatric hospitalization.

Rotto, ACSW, CEO, Dawn Project/Choices, Inc. workshop at the 2007 Virginia statewide conference: Systems of Care and Evidence-based Practices: Tools that Work for Youth and Families. Choices, Inc. has administered the Dawn Project for ten years serving over 1200 youth and families and now has replicated this model in two other states and four communities. The workshop shows how this model of family-centered, strength-based, and blended funding has worked in Indiana, Ohio, and Maryland.
